Lake Sagamore is a 110 acre man made lake located off Route 301 East of the Taconic Parkway in Kent Lakes, Putnam County, New York. The Lake was created circa 1946 by a visionary Putnam County banker and developer (Leland Ryder) who also owned all of the lands surrounding the Lake.
The plans Ryder filed with the Town for the Lake Sagamore community designated 7 parkland parcels around the lake which were, among other things, intended to allow access to the Lake for property owners who owned parcels across the road from the Lake.
The principal stream feeding the Lake is part of the Croton River system and is within the Croton Watershed. Accordingly, certain activities are within the jurisdictions of the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.
The Deeds from Ryder expressly grant the right to used Lake Sagamore for boating, swimming and fishing and contain several Restrictive Covenants, including that the property must be owned for a single family residential use, and no trade or business can be conducted on the property; the deeds also contain prescriptions on house placement, set backs, fences and docks.
The Lake Sagamore Community Association was formed in 1956. In 1974 Ryder sold the Lake and parklands to the Association. Membership in the Association is mandatory and the annual maintenance charges include expenses such as insurance, property taxes, and lake quality monitoring and maintenance. Extensive Dam repairs and improvements required by the DEC were completed in 2017 and were paid for through a Special Assessment. Failure to pay maintenance and any other assessments can result in forfeiture of deeded lake rights.
In 2018 there are approximately 75 property owners who enjoy deeded rights to use Lake Sagamore.
